The 2026 World Cup kicked off on June 12. Honestly, I should be eagerly glued to the screen, but I hasn’t had the chance to properly sit down and watch a match yet. Instead, I’ve just been listening to my husband excitedly discuss the results every night.
Among the matches he described, the most captivating one was the intense clash between the small African nation of Cape Verde and Uruguay. Cape Verde scored first, then fell behind by two goals, but ultimately fought back with incredible resilience to force a draw. Their match against Spain was equally impressive. Even though Spain controlled the game with 74% possession, Cape Verde held them to a 0-0 draw, showcasing amazing teamwork in defense. Facing 27 shots throughout the game, their 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha, made 7 heroic saves. This stunning performance shot him to fame and earned him the Man of the Match award!
Another classic match that won high praise for its fighting spirit was Japan’s draw against the Netherlands. Even after the Netherlands scored first, Japan maintained their efficient organization and discipline. Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura equalized with a quick counterattack. Soon after, the Netherlands took the lead again. Under intense pressure, Japan kept intercepting the Dutch passes. With rock-solid defense and precise counterattacks, Japan equalized again in the 89th minute! It is truly admirable to see an Asian team play on equal terms against a top-tier European giant.
In football, being the “underdog” can mean having a lower market value, fewer resources, or a smaller physical stature. When the underdogs win, it is because they refuse to back down. They use their sweat and relentless willpower to bridge the gap in strength. These “David vs. Goliath” victories always bring surprise, admiration, inspiration, and deep emotion!
Actually, the concept of the weak defeating the strong is very familiar to Christians. Turning to the Old Testament, we see many such battles:
Gideon originally gathered an army of 32,000 men. In the end, God asked him to trim it down to just 300 warriors, who then defeated a Midianite army of 135,000 that was as thick as locusts. Jonathan, relying on his faith in God, took only his young armor-bearer with him. The two launched a surprise attack, killing about 20 enemy soldiers and causing the entire Philistine army to panic and collapse.
David defeating the giant Goliath is a classic story that even children know, teaching us to trust in the Lord and not fear difficulties.
Reading these biblical accounts, one cannot help but cheer for their faith—they put aside their doubts, kept fighting, never gave up, and courageously moved forward by relying on God!
We often feel like we are in a disadvantaged position, yet we do our best to rely on God in those moments: in our workplaces, relationships, exams, families, and emotional struggles, we are all striving to push forward. Even when things seem impossible, we still fight for opportunities in the cracks of life. We do this not only out of hope for a better future, but because our faith comes from a good and powerful God. Together, we are living out an inspiring race of faith.
May we all carry this “victory through weakness” faith today. Let us not focus on how little we have in our hands, but on how great our Support is behind us, and bravely face every challenge in life.
