If you’ve been part of Manchester Alliance Church for a while, you know that missions aren’t just something we support—they’re who we are. A mission that extends to all believers, not just a chosen few.
From the very beginning, God has placed a calling on our church to go beyond ourselves, to step outside our comfort zones, and to bring the gospel to people near and far.
Yes, we are a predominantly Chinese church, and yes, we’ve planted churches across Manchester. But our identity is in Christ first and foremost—not our culture or language. God’s mission is global, and we are His ambassadors on earth. What an honor!
Missions: Not Just for a Select Few
Remember Jesus’ words?
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, ESV)
This wasn’t just a command for pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. This was for all of us! If you belong to Christ, then you have a role to play in His mission.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses… to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8, ESV)
Missions begin in our hearts, in our willingness to be used by God right where we are!
But What About the Barriers?
I know talking to people from different cultures or backgrounds can feel intimidating. Maybe you feel like your English isn’t strong enough, or you don’t know enough about other religions. But here’s the truth—God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.
Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China, once said:
“God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply.”
As a Chinese church in Manchester, we might feel our mission is limited to our community. However, God calls us to go beyond. Paul preached to both Jews and Gentiles (Romans 1:16), and we too, must share the gospel with all people. Why? Because the gospel breaks down all barriers, leading our brothers and sisters to God’s eternal love.
William Carey, the “father of modern missions,” put it this way:
“Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”
If we step out in faith, God will do things we never imagined. The Holy Spirit is with us, and He has placed us here in this time and place to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6).
Our Mission Field: Manchester and Beyond
Did you know that Manchester is one of the most diverse cities in the UK? Over 200 languages are spoken here! And we have four of the country’s most Muslim-populated cities—Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, and Bolton—right on our doorstep. That’s not a coincidence; it’s an opportunity to share Christ’s love.
Through Exploring Jesus Ministries, we’re reaching out to the unreached in Manchester and Rochdale. We’re praying for God to open doors in Bolton and Oldham. And on top of that, our church is preparing for mission trips to Peru, Greece, and Singapore! Isn’t it amazing that God is using our church to touch lives both locally and globally?
“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude… from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne.” (Revelation 7:9, ESV)
However, missions don’t have to start overseas. The nations have come to us! Every time you show Christ’s love to a neighbor, serve someone in need, or share your testimony, you’re part of God’s mission. God has placed us here to be the salt and the light (Matthew 5:13-16). Where will you shine your light?
Will You Say “Yes” to God?
John Piper once said:
“Missions exist because worship doesn’t.”
There are still so many people who don’t know Jesus. That’s why we go. That’s why we share. That’s why we serve.
So, let me ask you—what’s stopping you from saying “Yes” to God’s mission today? You don’t have to travel across the world to be a missionary. Mission begins where you are. It could start with inviting a friend to church, sharing your faith at work, or praying for the nations.
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers.” (Matthew 9:37-38, ESV)
Imagine looking back years from now and seeing how God used you to impact the lives of his children. Imagine our church shining as a light in Manchester and beyond. Isn’t it exciting to be part of God’s greatest work—the expansion of His Kingdom?
God is calling. He’s inviting you into His mission. Are you ready to say yes?
Let’s answer His call together!
